# The Vicús culture (500 BC – 500 AD)

Between 500 BC and 500 AD, the Alto Piura basin hosted the flourishing of the Vicús culture, settled around the hill of the same name in today province of Morropón. It excelled in gold, silver and copper metallurgy using lost-wax casting, hammering and tumbaga alloys, and in its diagnostic ceramics of the Vicús Negative and White-on-Red styles and the Vicús-Moche phase. Its deep vertical-shaft tombs with lateral chamber (boot-shaped) reveal a rigorous social stratification.

Entre el 500 a. C. y el 500 d. C., la cuenca del Alto Piura albergó el florecimiento de la cultura Vicús, asentada en torno al cerro homónimo en la actual provincia de Morropón. Destacó en la metalurgia del oro, la plata y el cobre con técnicas de cera perdida, laminado y aleaciones de tumbaga, y en su cerámica diagnóstica de los estilos Vicús Negativo, Blanco sobre Rojo y la fase Vicús-Moche. Sus tumbas de tiro vertical profundo y cámara lateral («en bota») revelan una rigurosa estratificación social.
