# Creation of the Department of Piura (1861)

After depending on the Prefecture of Trujillo during its first republican decades, the demographic and commercial weight of Piura demanded administrative autonomy. Through the Law of March 30, 1861, during the second government of Marshal Ramón Castilla, the Department of Piura was officially created with the founding provinces of Piura, Paita and Ayabaca.

Tras depender de la Prefectura de Trujillo durante sus primeros decenios republicanos, la gravitación demográfica y mercantil de Piura exigió autonomía administrativa. Mediante Ley del 30 de marzo de 1861, durante el segundo gobierno del mariscal Ramón Castilla, se creó oficialmente el Departamento de Piura con las provincias fundacionales de Piura, Paita y Ayabaca.
