# Chira-Piura Special Project and El Niño events

The El Niño events of 1891, 1925, 1983 and 1998 repeatedly overflowed the Piura river, flooding Castilla and Catacaos and causing the collapse of the Bolognesi bridge on March 16, 1998. To solve the floods and the water deficit, Decree Law 18381 of September 1, 1970 created the Chira-Piura Special Project: the Poechos Dam (one billion cubic meters), a 54 km transfer canal, the Sullana Diversion Dam and the Miguel Checa Canal irrigate more than 100,000 hectares and protect the cities from extraordinary floods.

Los eventos de El Niño de 1891, 1925, 1983 y 1998 desbordaron reiteradamente el río Piura, inundando Castilla y Catacaos y causando la caída del puente Bolognesi el 16 de marzo de 1998. Para resolver las crecidas y el déficit hídrico, el Decreto Ley 18381 del 1 de septiembre de 1970 creó el Proyecto Especial Chira-Piura: la Presa de Poechos (mil millones de metros cúbicos), un canal trasvasor de 54 km, la Presa de Derivación Sullana y el Canal Miguel Checa riegan más de 100 000 hectáreas y protegen a las ciudades de avenidas extraordinarias.
