# Feast of Our Lady of Mercedes "La Mechita" — Paita

Feast of Our Lady of Mercedes, Regional Patroness of Piura, whose image arrived at the port of Paita in 1532 and is lovingly called "La Mechita". Every September 24 devotees visit her and carry her in procession; many walk over 60 km from Piura.

## Cómo Llegar
Paita is about 57 km from Piura (45 min–1 h by bus or car). Pilgrims walk over 60 km along the Piura–Paita route.

## Información Detallada
La devoción a la Virgen de las Mercedes de Paita se remonta a 1532, cuando la imagen llegó al puerto con la Orden de la Merced. Su cuello conserva la huella del disparo de un corsario, parte de su leyenda milagrosa. Cada 24 de setiembre miles de peregrinos llegan a venerarla; muchos realizan la caminata de más de 60 km desde Piura y después continúan hacia Ayabaca para la festividad del Señor Cautivo.
