Máncora lies at kilometre 1165 of the North Pan-American Highway, in the Talara province, 187 km from the regional capital and 67 km from Talara.

Over half a century it evolved from an artisan fishing cove into the hub of coastal recreational tourism in northern Peru, blessed with a dry tropical microclimate, over 300 sunny days a year and warm waters. Just south of town, the Las Pocitas resort (Máncora Chico) features a rocky marine terrace that forms calm tide pools at low tide.

The main beach offers a regular tubular left-hand wave for beginner and intermediate surfers, while winter and spring winds favour kitesurfing. Las Pocitas concentrates hotels facing the sea, plus horseback rides, ATV trips into desert gullies and seafood cuisine based on the daily catch of grouper, tuna and shellfish.

Temperatures range from 22 °C to 34 °C: hottest from December to April, breezier from May to November.
