Tumbes
The Anniversary of the Political Creation of the Tumbes Department and its Provinces is celebrated every November 25th. Law 9667, enacted on November 25th, 1942, raised Tumbes to the rank of department and simultaneously delimited the provinces of Tumbes, Zarumilla and Contralmirante Villar, whose capital is Zorritos, shaping the current political geography of the region.
The epicenter of the events is the emblematic Plaza Mayor in Tumbes city, guarded by the imposing sculpture of cacique Chilimasa, leader of the indigenous resistance against the Spanish invader, and flanked by the monumental acoustic shell covered in colorful mosaics alluding to the "Meeting of Two Worlds". The celebrations begin with a solemn Mass and Te Deum, followed by the imposing flag parade and an extensive civic, school and military parade; at nightfall, the day culminates with the queen election, monumental serenades and live performances by the most recognized artists of the national and regional music scene.
The epicenter is the Plaza Mayor in Tumbes city; celebrations also take place in Zarumilla and Contralmirante Villar.
