Sechura and Vice Wetlands

About this place

The Sechura province occupies Piura's southern end, where Peru's largest desert meets the southernmost mangroves of the eastern Pacific.

The Médano Blanco dune, a field of live dunes constantly reshaped by wind, is the natural stage for regional adventure sports: sandboarding, 4x4 buggy rides and landscape photography in a hyper-arid setting. The nearby Sechura bay adds artisan fishing and seafood processing.

At the bay's southern end stretch the Vice wetlands and mangroves, a Ramsar site of international importance: a refuge for resident and migratory birds — herons, flamingos and varied avifauna observed from trails and viewpoints with local guides. The desert-wetland combination within a few kilometres makes Sechura a unique landscape-contrast destination on the Peruvian coast.

The climate is warm desert; sunscreen, water and early morning birdwatching are recommended.

How to get there

Sechura is reached via the North Pan-American Highway from Piura (about 55 km southwest). The Vice wetlands lie south of Sechura bay, reachable by unpaved road with local guides.
