About this place

The monumental zone of the provincial and departmental capital lies on both banks of the Piura river and is the department's logistics hub, with the Guillermo Concha Iberico International Airport in Castella and the main bus terminals linking the Peruvian coast and southern Ecuador. Getting around the historic perimeter is entirely walkable.

Founded as San Miguel in 1532 at Tangarará, Piura is Peru's oldest Spanish city and consolidated a viceregal orthogonal grid with manor houses of open inner courtyards. Its history is tied to naval memory and emancipation: Miguel Grau Seminario, the greatest civic-military figure of the War of the Pacific, was born here.

The main landmark is the Admiral Miguel Grau House Museum, a viceregal mansion with wide corridors holding the ceremonial sword, uniforms, decorations, handwritten correspondence and a model of the monitor Huáscar (open Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–13:00 and 14:00–16:00, free entry). Around the Plaza de Armas stands the San Miguel Basilica Cathedral with a colonial gilded main altarpiece, and a few blocks away the Municipal Vicús Museum with goldwork and ceramics of that civilisation. The urban experience is completed by the Bolognesi Bridge, the Old Bridge and the Piura river boardwalks.

The climate is sunny almost year-round, from 20 °C at night to 35 °C by day. The city works as an ideal base for sleeping and organising trips to the other provinces.
