Heroic Town of Catacaos and Huaca Narihualá

Catacaos

  • Narihualá Site Museum: Tuesday to Sunday, 9:00–16:00
  • Catacaos

About this place

Catacaos lies 12 km southwest of Piura, in the lower Piura valley; the Narihualá hamlet and complex is 5 km further. Connections are easy: 15 minutes by regular public transport, motorbike taxis and shared cabs crossing the valley's farmland.

Catacaos is recognised as Piura's craft capital and ethnographic centre. Family workshops keep alive silver and gold filigree together with traditional toquilla straw hat weaving, an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The classic itinerary runs along the historic Calle Comercio, lined with craft jewellers, hat shops and algarrobo woodcarving workshops.

Archaeologically, Huaca Narihualá is the central monument of the pre-Hispanic Tallán nation (Late Intermediate and Late Horizon periods, AD 700–1532): built in adobe over more than six hectares, it operated as the administrative centre and shrine of the god Walac. Visitors walk the ceremonial fortress of stepped platforms, crowned by the republican chapel of the Inmaculada Concepción, and its site museum with grave goods, ceramics and living specimens of the Peruvian hairless dog. Chroniclers recorded the rule of the Capullanas, women chieftains with political and spiritual authority.

The visit pairs with traditional picantería food: seco de chavelo, mashed yuca, seco de cabrito and Lent malarrabia, washed down with clarito de jora served in gourd pots. The desert climate is hot: wide-brim hat, sunscreen and breathable clothing are essential.
